For whatever reason, people seem to assume that their life is the prototypical version of normality. However as we age, and our life experience grows, we realise that our story is just one of seven billion other stories. We learn that what is mundane, regular or typical to us could be quite novel to an outside observer.

I learnt this lesson quite poignantly when I started discussing with friends the events of my childhood. What I thought were just banal, common or routine occurrences regularly prompted deep intrigue and engagement. Following their consistent promptings and advice I have now committed to writing my story.

When completed, 'Growing Up Under the Influence' will be a raw and unguarded depiction of a childhood ravished by the uncertainty of drugs, sexual assault and mental illness. Told through an emotional recounting of significant personal events, I will delve into the reality of being the son of a schizophrenic, drug addict and dealer.

For me, writing is a labor of love. I write to heal myself, because in writing I find freedom.
