SIGN OF THE OWL

 

Most people have read of my friend

The owl.  We wandered Thunder Butte

Creek when he and I were young.

Eventually he found another owl and

We lost of each other for awhile

 

Then, in a ship at sea, in a storm

When I thought there would be

No return I heard his voice

And a great quiet prevailed

 

Finally, having lost the ship and friends

At sea and nobody left but me

Moving to the solitude of Sierra Nevada

A stranger`s life away from friends

 

A weird and wonderful voice in the night

Who who, who who ---- a dream ?

No figment of the imagination this

A great horned owl will make this sound

After years and  thousands of miles--- my friend ?
