Arab Woman Chains of Customs and Traditions By: Khaled Hishma

Arab woman faces societal despotism and injustices in all the Arab Countries, but it varies from one country to the other, based on its extent, scope, magnitude, kind, nature and character. The basic problem lies in societal culture, and found in clothing customs and traditions a religious garment, and in the emphasis of some religious scholars on these traditions which forms a major challenge to Arab woman that limit and confine her development and hence her society.   Arab woman has been chained with various types of traditions, on various levels of shape, dress, behavior, thinking, and culture, which offends her as a human being with full rights and duties, and even deprive her of her humanity and dignity. Correcting Arab woman status in Arab societies and attaining her rights, lay in changing societal culture that is in contradiction with the tolerance and leniency of Islam, which is based on justice and equality. It also lay in in changing the woman's perspective of herself, and in believing in her abilities, and in knowing her rights.  As the Arab woman lives a crisis of marginalization, exclusion, deprivation, subjugation, killing, and domination that degrades, diminishes, and obstructs her womanhood, it is necessary to fix and reform societal entity and its various systems. And to confront the dominance and hegemony of the culture and mentality of contemporary per-Islamic pagan of  "Burying Female Alive", whether it is materialistic or mental. The contemporary "Burying Female Alive" concept, strengthens the continuity of imposing domination, despotism, negative and inferiority perspectives on the female. There is no human civilization without both ends of the equation:The man and the woman. And, the dignity of the woman is the criterion for human security and for achieving sustainable development.

There may be many restrictions on Arab women. But the so-called freedom of the West is the promotion of sexual immorality. A woman does not have to wear a mini skirt to feel beautiful or to feel more feminin. The Arab woman wears a veil or a scarf to preserve her honour, to keep her beauty only for her and her husband. The level of sexual crime in Arab countries is low compared to the West. The West has a high level of teenage pregnancies and single parenthood.Family is a united and tied unit in Arab countries.Children in the West have no much respect for their parents.Children in Arab countries and Africa are taught the importance of respecting women and elders.Whereas there is no family values and structure in the West. There are no valuable morals in place in the West.Women in Arab countries at least safeguard their honour and dignity.Women and young girls in the West have a very low self-esteem, believing that the only way to attract a man is to indecently expose their bodies as sex tools. The Western media is full of sexual immorality of all kind.In Arab countries men and women know their place, with due respect.Mentally the Western women are not free, since they always seek to degrade themselves in order to appear attractive. Therefore, it is important to carefully look at the cultural differences between the Arab countries and the West. It is important for us to question ourselves about the meaning of true freedom.
