A Paw On His Shoulder..by Michael 9 Years Ago The animal shelter had a wide variety of neglected and abused pets to choose from. It was Robert's intention to save and love and give a good home for one of them. A small brown puppy dog caught his attention as it looked at him with sad but loving eyes. That dog was his choice as Robert bought the puppy and took him home. He named him Rusty as the relationship began. The little dog would soon wag its tail which was a sign of a happy greeting for its master. The bond and love between them grew as Rusty was treated as he should be. Besides his regular dog food, Robert would give him some favorite leftovers of people food which Rusty looked forward to. They would sleep together as cuddling up with a paw on his shoulder would be their way of saying goodnight and pleasant dreams. Fourteen years later Rusty passed away of old age and natural causes. Robert cried for quite a long time as his best friend was no longer there. His pet's food and water dish was thrown away as not to remind him that Rusty was no longer there. However, Robert left a half eaten hot dog on Rusty's still saved dish. A favorite people food on weekends. Before falling asleep, Robert felt a paw sitting on his shoulder. The warmth a furry pet made him smile as he finally went to sleep. The half of a hot dog was no longer there in the morning. Robert smiled and cried to himself as his best friend came back to visit to let him know he still loved him. Case in point in a short love story between an owner and his pet.
