Planning your story

I'm fairly new and excited to have a forum dedicated to novels. How does everyone go about planning their books, and how much research do you do?

I think the amount of research depends on your story type. I write fantasy so I do zero, unless I'm looking something up in latin or something.

I start off with a short general plot outline and then I make a profile for each character, after that I plot out the major events and their order, then the smaller events that lead to the major ones, then chapter by chapter. lol

I used to not use an outline at all, but its easy to lose track of certain details that way.
How do you do it?

The story I'm working on currently is loosely based in fact so I've done a lot of research on location. I've roughly plotted the MCs, and am using a mind-mapping application to rack major themes, which works for me otherwise I have so much buzzing around in my head it's hard to keep track.

That's good, I think everyone needs their own system. :)
