Novels & Short Stories Forum Hello Folks!

I have a dream of writing a novel.  I have all kinds of lofty goals in mind, so many things I want to include and so much work I want to pour into this.  After all, writing a book is the closest a man can come to giving birth.  I don't remember who wrote that; someone, I'm sure, and probably someone famous.  Regardless, I want to give life to a story that's been brewing in my mind for years now.  

So I tried.  I wrote a chapter.  I don't know where in the book it would fall, but it's an attempt to get my mind working on my dream.  I suppose I'd like some thoughts, some input.  Mainly, whether or not the style, characters and story are compelling enough to continue reading.  Any thoughts, though, would be so appreciated.  The story is in my writing think, in the book "Prologue" and under a chapter of the same name.
