Want to be like JK Rowling? It aint easy. First, you need characters...

-Look outside. Look at people you dont know. Maybe you can make up names, characteristics, family.
-look at your family members. In a story, you can write about the characteristics your family member might have but not use the regular name.

in my writing it always helps to start by basing my characters on people I know. When i get to know them well enough they usually end up quite differently but then again that's just my starting point.

@softkitty exactly. Focus on people you know - it will be much easier.
