What's wrong with you?

What's wrong with you?

A Poem by Olivia Danielle
"

Never forget those most important in your life.

"

You were born two weeks early

You cried and the nurse in the white shirt took you away

She took you to the table

You could here mommy crying from there

The light was piercing

The sounds were foreign

When mommy was given you, she saw your little face

Shaped like a triangle, with scrunched up eyes

Mouth covering your whole face

Shrieking like a banshee

“What’s wrong with her?” She asked the nurses

“Nothing’s wrong.” The nurse replied

Two years past

You grew into your big head

Your mouth shrunk to a more normal size

You got angry mommy wouldn’t play

So you threw your toy at a clock

It came crashing down

“What’s wrong with you?” Mommy asked

You put your head down and cried

Twelve years past

You moved to an apartment in the city

Your mom couldn’t afford a new house

You never invited friends over

You cleaned all day

You got tired and cursed your mom

“What’s wrong with you?” mom asked

You ran to your room and slammed the door

Eighteen years past

You took a satisfying inhale of the cigar

Your friend wanted you to try for the first time

Your brand-new phone that your boyfriend bought you rang

Mother was crying, she had been worried sick

You looked down and saw the time

Coming home you tried not to wake her

She was standing there in the dark

“What’s wrong with you?” Mother asked

Tears brimming her eyes

You walked right out the door

Twenty-eight years past

You had not spoken to mother in years

You held your newborn in your arms

Your husband stroked your hair

You got a call

It was about mother

“What’s wrong with her?” You asked

You drove to the hospital

Twelve hours past

Nothing had been said

Mother looked small in the hospital bed

She guestered you to come closer

Her voice was so frail

You leaned in and listened to a soft voice saying

“What did I ever do to deserve you?”

She smiled

You felt burning tears

Nothing more had to be said

Nothing more could be said

This poem is depicted as a narrative, a chronicle of your life, from birth to contemporary. It's packed with truth and deep emotions, celebratory and melancholic, revealing your peculiar life experiences that inspire and relate in general for the rest of us, seeing ourselves in snippets of your life (in agreement and compassion).
The reoccurrence of motherhood, especially your relationship with your mother, shows the deep affection you hold for family.

Well done!

For some a full circle takes time... sometimes understanding comes with living - but sometimes not as well.
