The Return

The Return

A Poem by Pratik

It has been so long,

So very-very long…………

Ages ago I had lived a dream,

In the sea of reminiscence,

I hear old memories scream.

Today I take off at last,

To go back where my universe was born,

To unearth a buried story,

A place, far away and forlorn.

Leaving behind a grey black kaleidoscope,

A residue of fast lanes and fast lives,

A carcass they call a city,

Of phantom men and humdrum wives.

Like jagged rocks they rise,

The matchbox buildings and rickety skyscrapers,

In this charnel of lost souls

Love annihilated in a condom wrapper.

Back to where the Blue Mountains sleep,

On Sundays the old church bells chime,

A river romancing the virgin shores,

My empyrean of country songs and nursery rhyme

The dust swirls beneath the rumbling wheels,

Speeding road siphons into the thin air,

The radio playing its afternoon blues,

Angst creeping into the heart, cold and bare

I left you at home years ago,

The ‘come back’ calls held at bay,

But as I come back, a question haunts,

Do you still feel about me the same way?

At last I smell the soil, moist, fresh and ancient,

What a concoction of emotions its fragrance brews!

Just wait for me a bit longer baby!

Because at last I am coming home to you.

You are one of the best writers on here, I don't think many would argue with me on that. Superb. Thanks.

This poem is fantastic. I love how you compare being trapped in memories to being trapped in the city. While the liberation of love that lets the writer be content in the moment is found along with the "soil, moist, fresh and ancient," in rural nature.

My favorite line (purely for its poetic expressiveness):
"A river romancing the virgin shore"
priceless. Keep up the good work!

A wonderful use of metaphor bringing vivid images of the city, to the country and the wonderful news of your return to a love that I am sure awaits your return eagerly. Fabulous skills! Keep it going!

This is amazing. I like how you detailed this return in an emotional and dark way. Being away from the ones we love can be just that. Excellent descriptions as well in this. I love this poem Aaran. Thanks for sharing xx

I love the last line, "Because at last I am coming home to you" that line brought past memories back of a time I was waiting on someone ...and another time ...someone was waiting on me.
