Fifteen Years

Fifteen Years

A Poem by Abigail Beaudelle
"

Teaser poem for second chap in the works - 'Fight For Your Happiness'

"

'Most likely
you'll wind up
with someone fifteen years
your senior'

The augury drops
like mist
heavy over a great lake
the mystery of it
settling
and condensing
on my skin.

My mother
is suddenly
a Russian grandmother,
or
a wide-armed
Creole aunt,
bent over a red tablecloth
tossed with crab-claw
constellations.

A soothsayer,
proud and astute -

and though she's spent her years
fleeing magic,
the comment worked its own -

at seventeen the knowledge,
like an omen or sign,
becomes clear
and easier to swallow
than I first thought it ought
to be.

Staring at the red light
through the windshield,
hands soft
on the steering wheel
she lets a knowing smile
touch her lips
for the answer
to the riddle-

'and then,
Abigail,

you'll be happy.'

Well structured. Kept me interested. Nice flow and word choice had music.

A stirring prologue!! Sounds like the proceeding chapter will be quite the quest of discovery! Great luck with it!
