Bruce Wayne grew up as the princely heir to the awesome Wayne Estate, and when his wealthy parents were tragically murdered in a Gotham City alley after an opera-show, the young Bruce grew up with a strange feeling of revenge intentionality in his darkened heart. Bruce graduated from Dartmouth College and then traveled to Nepal where he studied martial arts and Shaivism under an Eastern guru named Ra's. He developed an uncanny sense of social vigilance and fighting humility when he returned to his beloved Gotham City as a prince of consciousness. Bruce Wayne took up residence again in Wayne Manor under the caring care of the family-butler Alfred Pennyworth, who thoughtfully tended to his daily meditations about vengeance-angst and social duties. When Bruce took up the mantle of Wayne Enterprises CEO, he quickly became the Gotham's greatest socialite-businessman, but his caring butler Alfred knew this prince of Gotham was destined to become more than just an American socialite. Despite Bruce Wayne's popularity, he remained steadfast in his concern for urban vigilance, and he constructed an elaborate underground computer-monitoring urban vigilance system in what he called the 'bat-cave' of human duties. He started honing his fighting skills and compared himself to a night-soaring bat creature.

ALFRED: I've fashioned you this special 'bat-man' vigilante costume, sir, in case you need armor for your wild passions!

Bruce decided to become the Gotham vigilante known as Batman. He soared into the night sky on his hang-glider, costumed like the 'bat-man' creature in the costume his caring butler Alfred fashioned for him. Bruce/Batman knew Alfred was his trusted friend and hence decided not to confide in anyone else regarding the purpose or focus of his Gotham 'crusade' to tackle all forms of certain if invisible crimes and evil. Perhaps Batman was still haunted basically by the tragic memory of his murdered parents when he was young and continued to harbor deep sentiments about vengeance. Nevertheless, he hoped to use his post-graduate meditation studies about transcendental vigilance to remain humble and steadfast in his pursuit of Gotham's worst villains, prepared to do just about anything to undo dominions created by evildoers, regardless of what the press labeled him as in everyday news-stories. In fact, after Batman began unraveling various crime-pockets in Gotham City, with strange and offbeat tactics and weapons like night-masquerading and rope-gun and tranquilizer-dart shooting, the press labeled him as a 'goodly' rendition of the Unabomber!

BATMAN: Even if Gotham labels me a madman, I remain conscious of my gift to offer justice in ways the police are unable!

Bruce/Batman learned of a new Gotham super-villain named Penguin, whose real name was Oswald Cobblepot. Penguin was exiled from the Gotham underworld, the mafia, after he betrayed a blood-diamond mob boss named Falconi. Blood-diamonds are simply warlord-mined gems from Africa/Europe used to fund terrorism in the modern world. Falconi was smuggling in blood-diamonds into North America and using profits to assist rogue terrorism profiteers all over the world and channeling in profits to boost his wealth linked to the Gotham underworld nightclub called the Ostrich. To subvert this sort of underworld mystique, Batman (Bruce Wayne!) decided to become a prowling ninja-thief, stealing blood-diamonds from Gotham Bank safe-boxes belonging to Falconi and his smuggler-associates. While the press now labeled Batman/Falconi as 'public enemies' creating an intrigue-war, Batman was more worried about the rise of the exiled super-villain Penguin (Oswald Cobblepot). In fact, after Penguin was exiled from Falconi's mafia, he decided to form a terrorist-gang to carry out bomb-threats on the Aquarium, Gotham Library, and municipal offices.

PENGUIN: I'll turn this city into a harp from hell!

Batman decided that Penguin was his real mission in Gotham. He prowled the streets and soared above the buildings in his hang-glider, looking for signs of Penguin's ghouls, part of the new crime-team known as the Red Triangle Gang. Penguin cared nothing for 'ordinary crime' and therefore sought more 'expressive' forms of antisocial subversion, seeking retribution for his explicit exile from the Gotham underworld. Batman knew that if he's to become the city's true 'red knight' of vigilance, he'd have to ensure the people of the worried city that Penguin's dark brand of malicious mischief wouldn't go unchecked. When Penguin sent a threat-email to the Gotham mayor, declaring his violent intention to destroy the Gotham Citadel, Batman went on a frenzied mission to track down Penguin's sewer-hideout and lead the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) towards it for ultimate deconstruction! This was a special war for city sanity, and Batman, the city's vigilance 'red knight' of modern justice and offbeat vigilantism, decided that ninja-intelligence would be needed for this new era rendition of holy diligence. His caring butler Alfred told him, "Gotham is blessed to have a daredevil such as Batman!"
