Detroit is a place of great traffic and therefore a place of great invisible crimes and a seething underworld hiding its otherwise bright and commercial face!

A Detroit policeman is murdered brutally and is resurrected from the grave by a ghoulish underworld 'dark angel' (a clown-figure named Violator) who names the reborn 'vigilante' Spawn and fits him with a terrific body-armor suit and helmet and new mind and glowing-eyes and powers, ready to fight real evil!

VIOLATOR: Welcome to the world of whatever, Spawn; there's no Utopia here, brother --- only evil.
SPAWN: You strange clown-man, you want me to be a vigilante in this diagonal city of diamonds and hell?
VIOLATOR: You've got what it takes, dear Spawn; I shall be your clown-dude guide in this after-life of justice.

Spawn had no inkling of what this 'after-life' would entail, since Violator was accurate in assaying the right assertion that this was no Utopia, as a new breed of villainy had become developed. A mad scientist had developed a genetic mutation 'creature' called the Thing to serve as his crime-empire killer, prowling the lairs of his criminal rivals and gorging and eating them! This was evil incarnate.

VIOLATOR: There's a fair reporter working for the Detroit Times named Jenny who still believes in Utopia.

SPAWN: Alright, clown-man 'friend' (Violator), I've burned this 'Thing' created by the mad scientist, and I'm ready to fight.

That abomination 'Thing' that Spawn killed valiantly was something that had become a 'dark friend' of the evildoers of this darkened city of Detroit, and only Violator knew Spawn 'had what it took' to send that mutation-abomination straight to Hell. Now, Spawn was ready to continue his 'good fight' in Detroit, guided by his dark-angel Violator. Times were not promised to become a heaven, but with Spawn around, perhaps there'd be less of a 'tasty' hell.

DETROIT TIMES: It's unclear if 'Spawn' is a reliable friend, but we know the 'Thing' is at least vanished from our psyche!
