BEEP, BEEP, BEEP! My eyes felt heavy still, I barely got any sleep last night but I don't know why… I sat up straight in my bed opening my grey eyes wide, now knowing why I didn't sleep. It was the first day of school! My new school. Ever since dad left, mom's been struggling to even put food on the table, let alone send me to a school for over two dollars a month. I think the reason I'm changing schools is a mix of not having very much money and the fact I was expelled from my last school. I looked at my clock, six-thirty. Why did I set my alarm so early? School doesn't start ‘til eight. I heard a knocking on the door. “Come in!” I shouted. My mom walked in the room. “Just wanted to make sure you were up” she said pushing her brown hair into a ponytail. “Well I am. Which one do you like better?” I asked pointing at two different outfits. One was a black criss-cross top with high waisted jeans, a leather jacket and combat boots, the other was a white summer dress with a choker necklace and the same combat boots. “Ruby?” mom said. I knew she said something, but I was just too stupid to reply. “Or should I switch the black top with a grey one?” I asked stupidly “Ruby!” she said a lot louder. I turned around, she looked like she was on the verge of tears. I stood up, my blue nightgown falling down just above my knees, I gave her a big hug. “I-I’m so sorry Ruby” she really was crying now. “Sorry for what?” I asked as gently as I could. She let go of me and put one of her hands on my cheek brushing my long black hair out of the way. You know those moments were adults say somethings wrong then pauses? Letting your pulse race and palms get sweaty? Well this was that kind of moment. “T-there was only one school I could afford... The a-all boys academy.” Now it was my turn to hold back tears. The boys academy? Only boys for the next two years? This is going to suck. I'm going to die. “That's not the  worst part. No one knows you’re a girl. I signed you up as River Edge, not Ruby Edge, you’re gonna have to act like a boy.” she said wiping her tears away. I took a huge breath in. I need to keep it cool, I need to

be strong for my mom, even though it feels like she failed me. “Its ok i’ll be fine” I said shrugging it off. She looked surprised, but so incredibly happy too. I put my hand out to scratch the back of my head then sadly pointed to it. “Then this has to go” I said half-heartedly. She handed me an arm full of boy clothes and said she’ll be in the kitchen. I changed from my comfy PJ’s to the boy clothes, a pair of dark jeans with a chain, a plain grey t-shirt which I decided I would wear my own leather jacket on top and a pair of old sneakers. I went downstairs with a new spring in my step, maybe this year won't be so bad after all. I walked into the kitchen where I saw mom setting up a chair with a pair of scissors in hand. I sat down covering my eyes with my arm so she didn’t see my tears. It felt like a million years before I was finally done, I looked in the mirror. Wow, I really looked like a dude with my hair cut all short. “Let's go” mom said. I looked at the clock seven-forty five already? My heart was pounding out of my chest not to mention the butterflies, no, the whole zoo stomping around in my stomach as we pulled up to the school. For being a cheap school it was really big “Here you go” mom said handing me a suitcase that I don't remember packing. “What's this for” I asked. She blushed, “That's right I didn't tell you, you’ll be getting a dorm… And a roommate.” Just great, add it to the pile. I checked my phone, OH CRAP! Its eight-fifteen, i’m late! I rushed in the building looking frantically for my classroom, C12. Ah ha! Found it I rushed into the room. Everyone was staring at me, correction every BOY was staring at me. The teacher sighed, “Class this is River, our new student  please treat him with kindness and respect.” He looked really bored like he’s said that to many times in his lifetime. “You’ll be sitting next to Patton.” he said pointing to a redheaded boy in the back. Damn it! Why does everyone here have to be like six inches taller than me, ugh boys, what can you do?
