Working Hungry

Working Hungry

A Poem by Adahdze
"

The appointees were so many that it was not dignifying being one. The money was peanuts, we worked hungry.

"
So many we were that it was
No longer dignifying
To hold an appointment of government
Gentlemen were mixed with touts.

We drank water and belched
Our wives suspected we had Clandestinely eaten and left them out
Water took the place of air
In our stomachs
It pushed it through our throats
Our entrails mewed like cats.

Inside us we were famished
But we held ourselves, showed bravery
To hunger and to those who didn't
Believe we were hungry
We were appointees on the payroll
If the king,
Every politician was
We collected peanuts and our pouches
Went empty the moment it was payday
It was better personally to stride
On your own to gainfully earn a living
Or so it will be.
