Solitude: My Best Friend

Solitude: My Best Friend

A Poem by Adam W Redmon

Over time I'd grown fond of it-
Being alone.
Completely dislocated from the rest of the world
the same world we see around us
falling to pieces.
Still-
Smiles marked on faces
The others laugh
Hell-
I laughed

holding hands with their lovers
it's like we've trained ourselves to be oblivious
oblivious to the entirety of the evil
in the world.
How do we stay positive-
Is it sheer willpower or something more?
Whatever it is
we learn it from each other
give to each other
Even take it from one another.

Such beautiful creatures we are yet-
There's so much regret, hatred-
Sadness
many negative emotions locked inside
Begging to be set free
The sadness is what gets to me
seems to be the only emotion I can get
a full grasp on
with sparks of happiness here-
Immense sadness there.
Regardless when the sparks come, my willpower to hold on-
To grasp it and never let go
retreats

Though when I am alone
Completely
by myself
I feel a sense of peace.
False peace?
maybe
but peace
Nonetheless.

In that quick-to-leave moment.
I am happy.
False happiness?
Maybe
But happiness,
Nonetheless.
