I am the Wind

I am the Wind

A Poem by Alyscia

The only light that was leftover was faint,
creeping lower and lower
below the horizon. I didn't have to look
his way to know he was smiling.
The beach makes him happy.
He says that the waves remind him
that whatever happens in life,
the water will always crash
at the shore. He says it keeps him
from giving up on himself.
I don't pay mind to the water
as much as I do towards
his hands. They're soft
and one of them holds onto mine
but there's sand in between them.
He says that the sand makes him think
how we, like the sand, are insignificant
in the world that we live in.
I don't think I am like the sand;
I am the wind. Like a breeze,
I am gentle and yet, like a gale,
I leave the people I love
behind in ruins.
