A Chapter by Ana Papaya
"

 memories
so fluid
they leak through cracks in the truth
were things really the way that I remembered them to be
   did those things really happen
i don't know what to believe
i see fragments like unfinished sentences
 conditioned to fill in blanks
with just one word i can change the truth
with one word i condemn you
 or set you free
 and I promise
to tell the truth
     the whole truth
 even the filled in parts
 because that has become
    my very best art

yes, i think for some of us...learning to sound like we are telling the truth, even believing it ourselves is a key....as we get older and wiser.

we often lie to ourselves about what we can and can't do as we age...

but some also bend the truth to suit their wants and needs...seems our politicians these days
like to make up the truth...and when the reality is bad, they claim Fake News.
ugh.

Filling in the blanks, memory merges truth and imagined truths into a narrative that helps us make sense during all the ongoing current movement of life, but it is only when the movement stops that we see holes in the plot and the story has been lost in the edit splicing.
Perhaps I relate to this as even the mundane can leave me feeling like I'm the only one without a script.
If my hunch is correct, my life has been the longest and most elaborate episode of punked to date.

Thanks so much, I appreciate that.
I very much enjoyed this! It is very relatable, I believe it may be one of our human instincts to protect ourselves and confirm what we want to be the truth. Is this always fair though? I feel that we must know when we are doing this, but as you say - conditioned, we fill in the blanks anyway. Very thought provoking - love it.

Thank you LauraKate. :)
Truth what is the truth? Whose truth? Your truth, their truth, politicians truth. I say be true to yourself. Remember exactly what happened and don't compromise on it to suit others. I very much enjoyed your expression in these lines Ana.

You raise a good point about whose truth.
Perception can play a big huge role in that.

first part makes me smile ...memories are what we want them to be sometimes for sure ... i like how you put it "they leak through cracks in the truth" can't be helped sometimes ... the call for brutal honesty when looking in is sound wisdom says i ... its the pathway to enlightenment .. and i really like how you turn it to poetry in closing ... i believe that poets strive hard for honesty in expression (most do) ... its a prime reason i feel comfortable here at the Cafe' ... or in any poetry group ... thanks you for sharing Ana!

Strange beings, memories.. remaining to hug and hold.. hovering to taunt or taint. You write so eloquently, gently enquiring, tempting truth, perhaps. Truth is the most obvious art of all.
