Steve

Steve

A Poem by Ansekenamun

I came from a galaxy far far away,
Crossed millions of stars in the milky way.
My name only the wind can pronounce,
So humans instead of making their vocals bounce,
Called me Steve.
Though odd, I decided to not wear my heart on my sleeve.
It’s utterly strange,
But I feel pretty estranged.
I’ve been here for so long,
And yet feel like an alien all along.
I’m quiet homesick indeed,
But my safety here is guaranteed.
For my home is a place of war,
But I’m here now as Steve in the bar.

For me, this poem is inspired form struggles with immigration which both me and my family have experienced. Doesn’t matter how long you live in another country, you still can feel like a foreigner. I choose the name Steve because it’s a simple name that everyone can pronounce. Usually when some foreigner has some weird name, people don’t even try to pronounce it which i find very annoying and rude, and give them a simple name.

Despite being 3rd generation US born there are times I have been made to feel as if I don't belong here. Thank you for sharing these powerful words and painful truth with us in your poem.
