SUMMER DRENCH

This poem narrates a small portion of my summer vacation spent with my cousins. I have mixed up orthodox poetry style and new gen poetry style.

SUMMER DRENCH

On a hot summer mid-morning,

Sitting on the back seat of a motor cycle, I was yawning

And trying not to behave like a portable salt water machine!

Because:

1.        1. My uncle was riding the motorcycle so fast,

so that my eyes were like sprinklers,

sprinkling salt water to the plants on either side of the road.

2.         2.The sweat glands on my skin decided to over work,

to compensate the 10 month vacation which they had before summer!

Finally the motorcycle stopped,

In front of a royal blue vintage house I was dropped,

It was a 3 day stay in the end of May

Spending time in my cousin’s house is … meh

But then my cousins had a plan and we started the real play

We roamed like nomads in search of a mango tree

Hours later when we found one, we rejoiced insanely,

Like how the ancient mariner would have felt if he hadn’t killed the albatross!

We pelted stones at the hanging raw green mangoes,

Grabbed them and headed to our royal blue fortress.

Held the mangoes like holding an expensive iPhone,

Sliced them like slicing a cheese cake,

Dipped the slices in a mixture of salt and chilli powder,

A composite mixture, whose inventor definitely deserves a Nobel Prize in Chemistry,

And when I finally tasted it … (no words can quantify the joy I felt)

Day 1 night stay was terrible

Sharing a room with a female Culiseta Iongiareolata was unbearable

Noises made by frogs rang in my ears, up close, aloud.

Later I realised that it wasn’t a frog,

But my cousin’s snoring!

Falling asleep was tougher than falling in love!!

I was the only petrified creature in the entire room!!!

Day 2; Like a rodent disturbed in the very first phase of its hibernation period, I woke up.

Cousins shouted in tribal voices,

All of a sudden their friends magically appeared in front of me,

**Kaboom** Just like that!

“Exploration” was our war cry,

We walked and walked and walked

And at last we found a green field,

Surrounded by epic scenic beauties,

A lake, a hill, few coconut trees, green grass, gentle breeze.

In short, it was a paradise!

Day 2 night; staying awake was a crime.

Oh! I wasn’t going to give up my sleep that time.

So I locked the windows facing south

Sixteen times.

I stuck up a piece of cloth in my cousin’s mouth,

Once he fell asleep.

***Hurray***

Day 3; **BANG** A teeny tiny mis-step near the front gate,

Laid on the ground for a while in strait,

Like a tourist taking a sunbath in Hawaii beach.

Then we went to the fields to play cricket,

Clouds played hide and seek with the Sun,

At one point we witnessed a bolt of lightning

accompanied by a stroke of thunder that was so frightening.

We ran to home like an ostrich chasing a jeep

*** Reached fortress but we were drenched completely***

In that heavy shower,

A shirtless boy was running on the sidewalk,

Singing an old song,

He was happy.

Sitting on the veranda, we consumed hot coffee

sip by sip, enjoying the rain.

Same shirtless boy ran in the opposite direction,

But this time he sang a different song.

We burst into laughter,

Happiness blossomed on our faces,

As this summer gifted us a complete package of joy,

And a thrilling climax in the form of a SUMMER DRENCH.
