The Lady in Florence

This piece was supposed to be for a 7-line contest, but then I found out I can't enter the contest, so I'll just post it for fun. The was supposed to be a 7line poem written about the picture above.

In beautiful Florence, where lovely ladies grow,

Lived Dante and Beatrice.

A love story, untold.

 

Dante belonged to another, his heart never really there.

To take from poor Gemma, Beatrice did not dare.

 

‘Twas on that day, at Ponte Santa Trinita,

That Lady Bice walked past, without care.

Thank you Andrew. This is actually a true story. In the 1800's I believe, Dante, a well known Italian poet, was in love with Beatrice but was married to another (Gemma). He never fully declared his love for Bice by mouth, but wrote about her all the time. The pieces he was working on when she died, were left unfinished, because his true muse had died. It's a remarkable story really.

I was thinking about that, since I couldn't enter it in the contest. I may write another one to expand the story. It's a real story and it is actually quite beautiful, yet sad.
