Edward

Edward

A Poem by AshleeKayann

In my quiet place

Lie thoughts of you and I

From the very beginning

to beginning just today.

Don’t you remember the moment

when you stepped onto the ground for the first time

and recognized me by my soul?

My heart swelled,

And for the first time

I was alive.

With every single laugh,

Every shy touch,

Every breath,

Every gaze from your eyes to mine,

My world spun in circles,

Faster, and still

I fell for something

But it won’t ruin me.

I’ll dance along the shoreline

And every highway between us,

Leaving a trail of heart shaped pieces

Of every word you and I ever needed

To fall in love.

Pick up every component

Of the heart that awakened

With your footsteps,

And they will lead you

To a night

filled with passing cars and fireflies,

and the sleeping body

begging for kisses

upon your return.

She’s unsure about the whole world,

And every second you’re gone

Her mind races

With “maybe I should just go to him”

And “what if tomorrow,

We don’t exist,

And I never get to see that loving soul

Through your eyes

Or hear your voice again?”

But the warmth of your skin makes her feel alive and calm,

For you recognize her by her soul.

In my quiet place, I call to you.

Look up with your blue eyes.

You’re almost home to me.
