Beat

Beat

A Poem by Ashley Acri
"

An amazing professor once told me that if we do not define our terms, we will never understand the people around us. So in my life I have begun to define my terms. This is the definition of beat.

"
I have lost a contest and had hands laid upon me.
I have been beaten twice over.
I have received a medal and a bruise.
I have felt unadulterated joy and unparalleled pain.

How do you define beat?
Do you define it by your trophy case?
Or perhaps by the number of incident reports you've had filed in your school?

We use words every day and we have no idea what they mean.
We listen to others speak and we hear what we choose to hear...
We define the terms of others and we are too blind to see it.
We do not care.
It is an accidental apathy, a misguided misnomer, and an egregious error all rolled up into one.

"I was beaten."
"I was beaten."

Do you understand?
