The One in the Flannel Shirt

The One in the Flannel Shirt

A Poem by Ashley Acri

You pick things up and put them down.
Did you know my heart was one of them?
You smile that adorable half smile and I turn so red you could mistake me for a fire truck or a tomato in the height of the summer.
You speak to me and all of the words catch up in my throat.
Everybody knows and yet you haven't seen it after all this time.
Two and a half years later and the tension between us is palpable every time we end up in a room together.
Do you feel it too?
Do you know that you've stolen my heart?
Do you know that the awkward girl who taught you statistics your freshman year was busy calculating the probability that one day you would know just how she felt and that you would find it in your heart to reciprocate those feelings in some way, in any way at all?
I don't think you know.
Or if you do I think you deny it.
If you know, please tell me.
Please take my hand, caress my face, and make me yours with nothing more than a dorky smile and a kind word.
