the missing piece

the missing piece

A Poem by Itumeleng Molokomme

I was born pure
Blank as a paper sheet
Eyes closed shut to keep me clean
Hands clamped tight letting nothing in
I cried
I cried so hard when breath first hit my lungs
When light first stole my comforting darkness
When hunger budged into the friendzone
Invited by the norms of this world
I cried so hard when I first hit the ground
Where are the arms that used to catch me?
I looked around and there they were
So I was programmed to learn to stand
Pick myself from the dirt
Smile after tragedy had hit
But somewhere along the line I broke
A system malfunction in my soul
Something hacked my motherboard
Eventually it all cracked
A card house weakened by the charms of the wind
And now here I am
Wandering like a kid
Looking for that missing piece
