Failing & Falling

Failing & Falling

A Poem by Betsy

I sit with my lips stitched together.

Time dripping like the leaky faucet in your apartment.

The nerves throughout my body match my frayed summer shorts

From the ghostly presence of how you held me close moments before.

I spill my heart for you and await your reply.

The silence drowning us like we’re caught in a tempest.

And just as I’m about to speak I sense words on your closed lips,

But glancing over I notice,

They’re tighter than the curfew that I’m pushing.

Suddenly there’s no more words left to be said

As you simply start the car.

Rage seeps through me like blood oozing from a cut

But sadness smothers me like fog.

Simply put, I close my eyes as mascara streams down my face.

Your silence told the truth and now my tears do too.

I shouldn’t have fallen for my best friend.
