When They Were

Sometimes your lot in life sucks. Sometimes it gets better. Sometimes your lot in life is awesome. Sometimes it get worse. From my book (WIP) 'And Now'.

When he was six, he did his homework,
And his teacher gave him a gold sticker,
And his mom hung it on the fridge
On top of the bills.
And his father kissed the doubts from her mind,
And his sister let him pet her dog.
He drew a picture and called it "Home"
And it was bright and it was warm,
And he showed his parents, who told him
He should keep it, because it was pretty.

When he was sixteen, he did his homework,
And his teacher gave him a fat, red 'F',
And his mom threw it in the trash,
On top of the bills.
And the wine kissed the doubts from her mind,
And his sister wouldn't let him bury her dog.
He drew a picture and called it "Home"
And it was cold and it was dark,
And he showed the voices in his head, who told him
He should leave it, because it was ugly.

And her mom tossed it to the end of the table
On top of the bills.
And the books kissed the doubts from her mind,
And her brother wouldn't let her put a band-aid his cuts.
She drew a picture and called it "Home"
And it was dark and it was cold,
And she showed her brother, who told her
She should hide it, because it was scary.

When she was sixteen, she did her homework,
And her teacher said it was flawless,
And her mom framed it and set it on the mantel
On top of the bills.
And her new step-father hugged the doubts from her mind,
And her brother stopped needing band-aids for new cuts.
She drew a picture and called it "Home"
And it was bright and it was warm,
And she showed her family, who told her
She should keep it, because it was lovely.
