Finally Free

Finally Free

A Story by Christopher Hampton

On the eve of a new year a great tension awoke. A conflicted thought of selfishness against the merciful path slithered its way into the mind of a young man. A young man whose best friend was not of human descent, but of canine. This friendship had grown strong over the years. Not a single affair could separate these two hardy companions. That is, until a tumor lodged its way into the innocent dogs throat.

With the reality of this new threat knocking on his door step, a decision had to be made. His love for this dog carried much weight, but he did not wish for his companion to perish. She fought just long enough to witness his sixteenth birthday. But after three gruesome months she could fight no longer. The time had arrived, and the darkness crept with haste. The drive only took five minutes, but it felt as if hours had passed. The boy watched as the needle breached her weak coat, witnessing the very essence of life fade away. Her eyes turned cold, and as she lay there lifeless in his arms, she was finally free.

This was a very sad read, but also very fluid and clear. Thank you for sharing it with us. My only critique is you had a typo here "The boy watched as the needle breached her weak coat, witnessing the very essence of LIVE fade away"

Your story reminded me of one of my friends. He just connects better somehow with dogs instead of people.
