Dark

Dark

A Poem by Busola S. Kolade
"

You're your worst enemy

"
I reach out,
Trying to find a way out,
I look around
I turn around
Like a dog chasing it's tail
It's all pointless
The only thing stopping me from falling is this rail
And I hold on,
Even though it seems senseless
It is my only hope
The only thing that drives me on.
...
I need to find light
I look tomorrow the right
I look to the left
But what is left?
I see endless darkness.
Where is the light?
My endless torment
This darkness
What if my rail of hope fails to hold me?
What if I fall, and there is nothing to catch me?
I need the light.
...
I look around
I turn around
Like a dog chasing it's tail
This time, there is no rail
Where is my hope?
I am afraid
I feel helpless
I am afraid
I feel hopeless.
...
I try
I reach up
I feel something
I touched a rope
I pull
It is my new hope
If I can reach up
There is a way out
I hope
I pull myself up
Making my way up
Slowly I go up
Inch by inch
Time passes
Seconds?
Minutes?
Hours?
I unaware
I pull myself up
Making my way up
Slowly I go up.
...
I feel something
I hear something
Wood shifting
Giving way
Just as the rope
My hope
Falling away
Faster than the way up
...
I fall
I seems endless
I fall
My hope was pointless
As I hit the ground
I realise something
I stand up
I look around
I turn around
It's all dark,
Darkness all around
...
I took off the sleeping mask.
