Remember me as a Martyr

Remember me as a Martyr

A Poem by Balkaran Sidhu
"

Where are those values of Indianism...

"
Let me not concieve more truths
about the contemporary brio,
for what the smoldering altruism
gave me some uncurable wounds.

All I had wished for was some lovingness
a benevolenct  existence
some inherent tender values
from my native purity.

But time enlightened me with scars
that nobody deserves,
what the fire of lust embossed
leaving a burn on my essence.

I was taken to a dark dark place

where the devils rule

where no humans had gone

I was rattled by ruthlessness

The blaze of unrelenting desires

bruised my entity

Now I feel hollow from inside

with a wounded soul I try to fight

My woed soul now needs some rest

as am too weak to fight this battle

And now when I have to say my final words

I won't say I am a victim of some tragedy
or a sufferer of some callous act
Am a martyr of a new awareness.

I am a source to a new consiousness
And thats how I shall be remembered!

Keep this flame of this discernment alive

For my sacrifice should not go in vain...

Author's Note

Balkaran Sidhu
She was a 23-year-old medical student, severely beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi two weeks ago, was flown to Singapore in a critical condition by the Indian government on Thursday for specialist treatment....she passed away last night..died off multiple organ failure triggered by brain damage. It was a ruthless act ...the one which coudn'teven be imagined... :(
Well..certainly it would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions in the right way into a constructive course of action...

its amazing she is a martyr any man who would abuse a woman is a coward as I see it she would be glad for your work of art in her honor i'm glad you have the heart to do this as well. this is a great poem really expresses how you feel and what her memory means to you

the intensity and brutality of her attack and subsequent death are more than we can comprehend, living in privileged society. it is a disgusting and blatant display of the barbarian mentality which still exists in our world...such people are truly no more advanced than apes, in the scheme of things....they should be caged and made to wallow in their own filth.... awesome write!

:( So sad. Beautiful poem though.

I find it interesting that she does not identify herself as a 'victim' and I agree with a former reviewer that the word 'lust' does not quite fit in with the horrific, agonising extencity of the attack. Overall I found the poem very thought provoking, moving and memorable, thank you.

That is so.... Ugh!!! I can't find the strongest word I am allowed to use!!!

No woman deserves that. It's sickening. >:(

This was a wonderful tribute to her. Just incredible :)

I would change one word... exchange lust for hate. Experts are unanimous in stating that rape is not a crime of passion but of hate and power. India has a horrific record of tolerating this crime, It is time to change, maybe now is her time.

I just cannot even begin to fathom the horrifying brutality of what they did to her. And she actually bore it all on her body and fought till her last breath. She was a brave and noble soul indeed. May the world change for better for her noble sacrifice.
