The Old Outfit

The Old Outfit

A Poem by Barry!

It's time to take off the costume,

It's time to wash off the paint

And think of what it means to be me.

They're packing up the wagons,

They're rolling up the tents

And moving the show to another town.

"It'll be bigger!"  They said.

"With Fireworks!"  They said.

"And a hundred things you've not dreamed of!"

"Not me," said I

"I'm not as spry or naive

As I once was."

And I hung up my floppy hat and left.

They go on well without me

My place in The Grand March' s been filled.

The parade didn't pass me -

We just took different streets.

And though I won't wear it again

I can't just throw it away

And I'll always remember it

- Like everyone -

Better than it was

- My time -

In the Army.

funny with your picture and your talk of tents and shows I got the impresion that you were a clown so I was thrown by your ending, but I think this was your intent... to portray your old uniform as a "joke" of sorts. It's funny when we remove ourselves from a time in our life we seem to remember it as "better than it was". Well written. I enjoyed this.
