The Streets of Baghdad

The bombing of Baghdad before the U.S.A. invaded.

 Yesterday I walked the streets of Baghdad,

Along traffic laden roads,

Past modern buildings and ancient temples.

Leaden clouds darkened the sky

And draped the grateful city

With sheets of rain,

And I felt the cooling wetness

Run in rivers

Down my face and neck

 

Today I walk the streets of Baghdad,

Along cratered deserted roads,

Past gutted rubble and ruined temples.

Blue-steel clouds darken the sky

And drape the cringing city

With a rain of whistling metal,

And I feel the blood and fire

Run in rivers

Down my face and neck.
