LAMENTATION

LAMENTATION

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

sealing the letter

"

LAMENTATION

I set my pen on the oak writing desk

moist from my tears

my cheeks sodden from lamentation

my head arches as I stare at my words

I secure the envelope with my soggy fingers

as my tongue is the texture of desert with burnt sand

I am hopeful that my soul will tinge his

to compel his compassion, understanding and epiphany

I shall seek to moderate my sentiments

as much as my core will sanction

nevertheless, I shall not deny my personage

I kiss the envelope as I slip it into the letterbox

my damp cheeks dry up as the wind animates

tis quite a fine day, I believe it might be worthy

for my psyche to take a stroll away from fond

memories at the Bridge

as it might beget a flood of weep

amble out in fields where cows chew on and on

 could eye them endlessly

I am adept at bird calls and I relish their melodies

Tis brilliant, ample to wear my sun shades

as I stroll yet with a deep concern about

my soldier’s safety

word has it that our men are forcing back the Germans

which could denote perhaps the war is nearly over

I trust he will collect my letter soon and as he reads it

he may indeed slump over as I bare my true emotions to him

I am sure receiving the letter will be exactly what he needs to help push him through this terrible war and back into her arms again. Nicely done Betty. This is fun.

Hopefully they are right now pushing them back to where they came from and will be but a moment away from you now, after liberating Common sense and making sure they never think of such horrors again. Like persecuting people and keeping loved ones from their families.
I know this isn't said often, but hitler wasn't all bad... He was the one that killed hitler after all, although he still doesn't deserve a capital letter in his name!

this letter should cause him to want to come home as soon as possible. War is a lonely hunter of souls and hearts.

It appears the speaker is still concerned about her soldier's not understanding her view of things. In fact, she is in tears about the situation. She wants desperately for him to understand her, but beneath that need is the fear he will reject her over it. Still, she is willing to compromise only so far. The letter she mails to him apparently makes these concerns clear. She also notes that the US troops are forcing the Germans back. I would say, then, that the time period here is after the Battle of the Bulge, which ended in January, 1945. The war will not last much longer. As to the romance, we cannot say.
