Gentle Lass on the Neon Street

Gentle Lass on the Neon Street

A Poem by Billy4

Gentle lass on the neon street
Dances merrily off the beaten track
-Hey you got any crack love?-

Blues infest the street outside
To the city's inner limits a gentle lass is inclined to roam
-Oh, such a sorry sight on show-

With blackened eyelashes and a Tennessee drawl
The hotel hostess seems to have It all
-But I know she ain't looking at me

Near a vacant pay-phone a saxophone blows
Through the pockets of the people where a gentle lass flows
And calls for the hand of her man

They dance beneath the evening moon

Hand in hand with the f*****g Swine
Tangled up as a coil of twine
Moving like the smoke from the glowing ember pile
Against the crow black silhouette Memphis skyline

In the steel framed bridges moans a hot south breeze
The sun sinks low and the river recedes
The shadows grow tall -this place must be

Somewhere to someone but it's nowhere to me
But when you got nowhere to go y'know it's somewhere to be
And maybe I'll be happy here for a while

The kick drums boom and the microphones hum
Each and every room is full with people on the run
They're all waiting on the night, the night to come

On the ground, grit and glass
And the hagard frame of a gentle lass
Swept to the side by every Passing stride

I stand beneath the evening moon

Then with the sun come up and the birdsong high
Gonna pack my bags, gonna say goodbye
Without any great sorrow or any great joy
To the crow black silhouette Memphis skyline
