The Game

The Game

A Poem by H. E. Schreiter

Flashes of light

Illuminate the darkness

Whispers

Speak secrets

Of the hidden

Thudding of feet

Dashing for cover

Yells

Of being spotted

By “it”

Bobbing and jerking lights

Chase the hidden

From the shadows

Running

Down a deserted street

In the middle of a darkened town

Sighs of relief

Escape within reach

Ended

By the touch of a hand

Sides changed

Partner now enemy

Race through the night

In pursuit of victory

Ninjas lurk

Hidden in shadows

While enemy forces

Scour the land

Shrouded in darkness

Searching

For the ones

Who elude capture

Sneaking down alleys

Spying on hunters

Hunting for their prey

A quick flick of the light

All is lost

Sprinting for safety

So close and yet so far

The hunter gains on the prey

Catching one in its clutches

While the other gets away

The last man standing

Alone in the night

Runs for the trees

A final hiding place

Stopped by a light

Turns to flee

But is surrounded

The game is over

The enemies have won

But only for now

The night has only just begun.
