A Love We Once Had

A Love We Once Had

A Poem by Erika Jones

You once told me you loved me

The moment you asked me out

On that cold February night

Right after Valentines day.

I answered with a yes,

Because I knew we would be great

And because you and I looked like we

were meant to be.

Months had gone by

And our love was like fire

Because together we had become stronger

And our hearts soared high in the sky.

For a while I knew we weren't able to be apart

And together almost a year, we had been

Until I finally noticed you had changed

To a person I never knew.

Was it something I said?

Was it something I did wrong?

Was it something you never wanted to hear?

Or was it something that became my fault in the end?

You left me for someone else

Someone you barely even knew

A person you saw for only one week

A person who I knew was using you.

I tried to warn you

I tried to pull you back

But your heart had forgotten about me

Forgotten about us.

I tried to rekindle the love we once had

But I should have known from the start

Love that's like a fire

will always be able to be put out.

In the end, I felt abandoned

I felt used and unwanted

As my heart grew cold

Like the cold night in February where you left me.
