Living

Living

A Poem by Kat Williams

Living

Car notes

Light bill

Gas bill

Water bill

Air bill

Yeah I’m just waiting on that one

Cause we all know its coming

I would protest but that takes

Air

And I’m trying to save mine

Like rollover minutes

1000 minutes for $140…

That don’t equate but I pay

To text

lol’s

and

Where u ats

Turning into

F**k u’s

Good and bad

From a distance

And $60 a month

so I can visit

www.ineedattention.com

and lie

about who I am and what I want

cause its expected

truth shields

cruising

more out of state numbers in my phone

than local

So on a typical Saturday

I can visit Georgia

Texas and New York

all from the comfort of my couch

but I can’t find a friend willing to do

dinner downtown at 5

cause they chatting up some chick

online

out of state

hetero...possibly

not that it matters right?

just looking for friends right?

the a*s picture is just for laughs

and giggles and grins

I’m smiling

While contemplating life

My life

and how I’m not living it

Simplifying it

Is what I stated I was going to do

Equated to

dropping my minutes

Along with some friends

Recognizing that

Change comes from within

And

Without that I might as well

Stop

Stop pretending that

This diet is going to work

Even if I eat two extra pieces

It’s only chicken…

The good white meat

Stop saying forever

When I mean 5 years

Sorry

Stop playing a game

With someone that

Doesn’t play well with others

Issues past me

I’m just the focus

At times

Admitting that age is more than a

Number

And I’m getting old

40 ain’t the new 30

new math rules don’t apply

to being able to party til 2

and be at work at 6

can’t do it

Accepting that kids

Ain’t me

In me

Out of me

Harsh reality

Of mom leaving sooner

than expected

and brothers

doing less than expected

Kin folk

calling when least expected

death

bills

you answer

breath

Cause you know its coming

Me and you have way too much in common. Everytime I read your work I find pieces of me. And this ain't to butter you up either. Seriously, your work just connects with me.

"So on a typical Saturday, I can visit Georgia, Texas and New York, all from the comfort of my couch, but I can’t find a friend willing to do , dinner downtown at 5." That's my everyday. I know people who live in every state and on several contienents. Yet for some reason it's always harder to link up with the people I know in town. It seems like if I lived anywhere else I would be having a blast daily. At least it seems...

This poem is really how life goes for most. I love how you brought up the subject of oxygen too. The "air bill" is something we all think of and the last "breath" brings this around full circle. And yes, I too thought Jay-Z was crazy with the 40 is the new 20. No one is getting younger but we're all still living.
