Drowning man

Drowning man

A Poem by Bonaventure Onuabuchi

I have gone a long way,
but now bored and wearied on this odyssey.
Going to somewhere between here and there,
expecting fortune from fate,
which seems to be against.
On this trip of disgust against predictions!
I have worn myself to a shadow.
No more leeway to move.
Just gathering my remain self up,
hoping an end to this breath of agony.
Yet! no sense of permanent apnoea!
The heart still active,
Responding, to exhilaration from nowhere,
"the smell of victory unseen",
"the destination at hand too far".
Break a leg!, the heart called on me!
Showing me the joy of relentlessness,
the bridge of cross over just a step ahead.

Aware of its needless,
to dig on my heel,
but I am already dead on my feet.
So I swing into the needless.
Never say die!
I heard again from the heart,
leading me to the cross over bridge.
I don't know where the gut from,
but I took a step.
Yet! I see a fated ill-luck.
The bridge of cross over broke,
there lies a drowning man.
With two choices one to choose,
Living the world again,
Lets the water a tomb.
Needless to cry!
I seek a buoyancy aid,
But none in sight.
Swimming, now the last resort,
Applying the drowning man strategy,
Holding on hand on anything,
Pulling out all the stops,
Paddling my own canoe,
In the midst of life and death,
Hoping to get to the sky,
And sure to get my pie.
