Truer Love

Truer Love

A Poem by Brenden Moran

When you are standing alone in a rainfall

Outside the doors of a grand dance hall

As you watch the yellow car drive away from you

Hold your tears so they don’t break through

Don’t seek another partner’s hand to grab

And do not let this rain so cold and drab

Mix with the tears that pour from your eyes

Shield your face and accept your guise

Walk your way back to your home

Climb into your cold bed completely alone

Sleep the night away as you have never done

Until the highest point is reached for the sun

Awake at this moment and open your doors

Take a brisk and long walk in the outdoors

Welcome the smells and sounds of the forest

Give riches to the man that is poorest

Ride your way across trails and around lakes

On the tops of mountains place your stakes

Hand a flower to the fairest lady in the land

During a life and death spar take your stand

Read the most philosophical of great books

Go crawdad fishing in the gentlest of brooks

Learn a Romance language and recite poetry

Give to the homeless boys and girls joyously

Do a deed that helps those who are incapable

Forgive a man who is obviously culpable

Love the man who has turned his back on you

Place an arrow on the bull’s-eye, through and through

Give a holiday gift without naming yourself

Win an honorable award that you can shelf

Sleep a cold night on an empty park bench

Find an empty hand in a crowd to clench

Seek a love that will not leave you alone in the rain

And you may find that this is the love you gain
