The Dying Art of Telephone Notepad Doodling

The Dying Art of Telephone Notepad Doodling

A Poem by Brett Hernan
"

Spoiler: In part, it's about gun violence.

"
pointed barrel
directing finger
dictating
you go away,
permanently
almost everyone has refused
the Best Oscar
award the dying art
of telephone
notepad doodling
now your head
is like the moon
made from ashes
and charcoal
may you blush
considering pistol handle
surrogate parent
strong hand tender
reciprocal grip
fingered trigger
mother's finger tip
searching infant gum
stroking intimately
inside mouth
seething flames
pucker
for any sign

of first erupted tooth

today
i met a man of not-so-long-ago
he touched my heart
with his warm, round eyes
and short exchange
which included
that he adopted a boy
much like mine
so that he may live
a life
worthy of the child
inspired i am
by my new-old friend's
solace in word-release
greetings
again and again
betwixt and between
we shall meet
