Oblivion

Oblivion

A Poem by Brittany Bostic

Oblivion
I am not afraid of oblivion.
I find it comforting.
The fact that one day nothing will matter is promising.

Everything we do,
everything we touch,
everything we think about,
will all be gone and with it will go our bodies and our souls.
We all want to leave something behind.
A piece of jewelry,
a child,
or even a memory.
Writers want to leave something else behind.
We want to leave our words,
our stories,
our characters,
our people.
We want to leave a piece of ourselves.
When we leave it behind we don't fear oblivion.
Our soul is in our words.
That means when we leave it behind,
after we are gone it's okay.
We don't have to be afraid of leaving anymore
because part of us will be here long after we are gone.
Don't fear oblivion.
It will happen,
we will all be gone.
And that's okay
because we are going to leave behind the most important thing…
our stories.

I think this, as also other writings by you, are always a strain of thoughts, wisely overthought and then written down. To me, it's almost essay-ish but I like the way you think about this topic and working out images as ideas/thoughts offered to the audience.

Yes, too true. You say it well with your words. But we also leave behind our whole life experience as it has interacted with others.

i love this poem...because writers want to do exactly that...leave our words behind....and knowing that we are going to leave them allows us to embrace oblivion....

a writer's hope.

Thank you for such kind words. I am so glad that you loved it.
Hi Brittany, I like it. Writing as an immortality project. To be ok with oblivion. I am not quite there yet...

To write is to live and feel passion seething through your veins that somehow shows up in words on paper. I love words and the strange way that they use themselves to portray everything we have in.. more..
