Heart

Heart

A Poem by Broken Dent
"

A poem about the transformation of human emotion over time.

"

There you go again

Flirting yourself to the world

A crush here, infatuation there

Off trying to find Her

So confident in yourself!

Always so confident, always been

Be reasonable for a second

Do you honestly think your current method

Of falling for every pretty face is effectual?

But reason is beyond you, isn’t it?

Even boasting that you deem it obsolete

Love doesn’t need a reason, you say

Foolish…so foolish

Year one

Your pleading was incessant

FINE! I’ll go along, play your game

After all, I know as little

As you do around here

You pranced around the campus

Like an unbroken puppy

Master restraining his leash from behind

Shaking his head

Lunch dates, walks, picnics,

You did it all!

And for kicks

You dragged me along!

Crazy thing

So drunk in your own emotion

You became blind to the purpose

A lost cause, I would mutter

And then you proved me wrong

You met Her, I met Her

Dear God, what a pristine being

Completely forgetting to mock me

Your focus, life locks on Her

Time, attention, money

All on Her

Anything, ANYTHING

To make Her happy

To return the favor

It was too perfect

Too good to be-

Well She did it

Dropped you like a broken toy

Shattered on the cold hard ground

Of reality, you were

Why, you echoed, as if an answer

Would take pity

And fling itself from the clouds

To you

Why, a broken record

Crawling back into your cage

A sickly animal to be sure

The real fall-guy?

The guy that dragged you

Out of your slump

Nursed your self-esteem

Back to health?

Ta-da

Year two

You come out of the cocoon

Another year, yes?

Willing to try again? I smirk

But you are

Different

Enlightened eyes clouded

By somber thought

Passing every face

Interested and not

With quiet indifference

The stone façade

Explains to me

Merely more rational now

Really?

Is rationality that dehumanizing?

You are too cold, I retort

I scorned your eagerness before

But this disconnection

Is far from ideal

Your humanity is crumbling

Come back, learn to love

Again, it’s not hopeless

I’m not doubting your potential

I’m…

I’m sorry

I was the pompous fool

I accused you to be

Bravado in my confidence

Crippled my own senses

To see, to listen

At your most dire moment!

I was the polished brass lock

Keeping you out of your own refuge

When the sleet came down

I look at you now, an aberration

Of my own design

I will fix you, try at least

If you so fancy

To forgive

The metal mask motionless

Then

You smile

Inner defenses thin, guards drop

Embrace

Eyes glimmering once more

Expressing your answer

Year three

I will try

Restoring your nostalgic fervor

Taking pride in place of scorning it

Though the weakened distrust

Still holds, we will build

Learn to love, progress on hope

After all, despite your blind passion

You are still my own

Heart

The heart can lead us in the right or wrong direction. But the strength of the heart can overtake our Will to think. A excellent poem. Story and wisdom were very good.
