Brindle Dog

Brindle Dog

A Poem by William B. Burkholder
"

I loved you, like my child, like my brother, like my best friend.

"

Brindle Dog

Brindle dog my friend;
You always gazed at me with knowing eyes.

Forever there to lend a helping paw,
A kind lick,
A lighthearted howl.

Talking to me with your eye's
And your, "Awoof!"

That thing you always did with your lip
Over your one fang,
Looking like a four legged Elvis!

Just short of seeing you born, I helped  to whelp you,
Trained you, at least as much as you would allow.

I loved you,
like my child,

like my brother,

 like my best friend.

Summers; do you remember?
Sitting on the patio drinking Rolling Rock together,
Mine out of the bottle, yours out of the bowl.

That crock pottery bowl that now lays empty and dry;
And your collar with name tag hanging on the nail there.
O brindle dog, I miss you dear friend and companion,

My colleague in fetch and give paw.
You were a good boy.
Your ashes are the gift to the winds now,

May you forever run in fields of clover and grass,
The sweet grass you loved to chew, and roll in.
I will miss you faithful brindle dog,

My gift was you and all your canine whims,
My soul feels your loss and forever it shall,
Kind, loving, and faithful friend.

Farewell.

A fitting tribute to a fallen comrade, companion, friend, touching without being maudlin. I live with a boarder collie/australian shepard mix and your poem expresses the emotions I would feel if she were to die.

Brindle is striped, correct?
