Living While Black

Living While Black

A Poem by Candice A. Tinnon

Do I really want to drive?
We can't even go out for a walk
Do I really need to jog
Do I really want to go shopping and should I dare to use a coupon?
Do I really want to go to the park? Have A BBQ?
Do I really need to go out and eat lunch
Do I really need to garden
Do I really want to sit in my car?
Should I dare to sleep in the common area of my dorm

________________ while black.

Look at this! This is my mental space.
These are the things I'm starting to debate
I'm over the ignorance from people who can't relate
The same ones who are still asleep, while we have to stay awake
Beyond tired of us dying every week from their fear or their hate.

Author's Note

Candice A. Tinnon
I wrote this with a heavy heart, a depressed mind, and fed-up spirit as we've three different black men that didn't deserve to lose their lives. Ahmaud Arbery while jogging, Douglas C Lewis because a white man "feared for his life," and woke up one this morning and found out out 21 year old U.S army vet, Sean Reed.
