Humanity

Humanity

A Poem by Carolann Dowsett

The world is shallow and heartless

full of contemptuous disrespect

We have turned away from love

allowed lustful desire to overtake our flesh

Blinded by our own egos

we use people then just throw them away

like so much wasted garbage

left to rot in the stench of emotional decay

What has become of us

how did we fall so far

Once we strove to attain the highest star

to be something greater

than all that we are

Nighttime is closing in on our souls

darkness threatens to take hold of our hearts

We walk through the shadows

covered under a cloak of vain pride

justifying our actions with senseless logic

and pitiful lies

We are but children of the night

lost to the fire

helpless victims of our own needs

and carnal desires

When will we grow

when will we learn that life is but a moment

in time and space

a brief flicker of humanity that touches our souls

before eternity opens it's arms

and we fall forever into its unknown embrace

What will become of us

when the end comes

will the cold fingers

of the eternal dark

consume us

and leave its deadly mark

Or will we be lifted up

in the eternal light of God’s glory

where we will be forever safe

able to rest at last

in the Lord’s loving embrace

The choice is ours alone to make

yet still we walk around blind

unknowing

uncaring

disembodied spirits wandering aimlessly

with no real peace of mind

Lost souls trapped

in a godless void

worshiping our flesh

while we allow our souls

to starve to death

We feed greedily

upon the lies and deceit

created by our own hearts

yet from this no nourishment

enters into our inner most parts

We need to enter into the light

turn away from the darkness

before we are lost forever

in an endless night

Eternity is but a moment away

a single breath

a single heartbeat

that fails to bring life to our flesh

A brief moment exists

between here and forever

A single moment lies

between our lives in the flesh

and the eternity that awaits us

on the other side of death

We must awaken

from our deadly slumber

open our eyes wide

before we are torn asunder

Look and see all that lies

beyond the fabric of life and death

before it’s too late

and we are put to the test

We need to surrender into the arms of eternity

when our time on this earth is over

knowing that we will be forever free

in the loving arms of our Eternal Father

Not lose our souls to insanity

In the place where the lost all grieve

because of our lack of humanity

and all we refused to believe

I agree with your poem. When we lose concern for life. What become of the goals of men?
"We need to surrender into the arms of eternity
when our time on this earth is over
knowing that we will be forever free
in the loving arms of our Eternal Father"
I believe people don't realize we pay for our sins in the end. We will reap the good and bad in a life. Better to walk with kindness and hope. Then hate and greed. Thank you for the amazing poetry.

Really like the meaning behind this poem it's so true! You should try adding some punctuation to make the text more richer and dramatic. Anyway keep up the good work!! :)

Thank you :)
I love the first verse and the lines "While we allow our souls to starve to death"
Amazing how the system works and that people cannot truly grasp the reality that surrounds us. really liked the strength in this poem.

That's wonderful, thank you.
We are captive to our passions before the age of 30 This is natures way of making sure we procreate and survive t is also why abstinance is such an open joke. Nature doesnt allow us to say no to some things. But character is something we hone with time and hopefully we get by

Well I've managed abstinence for quite some time lol But yes it's generally not an easy thing to do... read more
A very good anthem, thought the last four lines build a beautiful bow,to embrace the whole.

Thank you.
I do agree that humanity needs to aspire to greater things, its not enough to give everyone a smart phone; smart phone, dumb people.

Haha so true :)
wow i really like this. really well worded. i like that you kind of went with a more abstract description of god rather than a specific religious interpretation. at least that's what i took from it.
"Nighttime is closing in on our souls
darkness threatens to take hold of our hearts
We walk through the shadows

justifying our actions with senseless logic
and pitiful lies"
"Lost souls trapped
in a godless void
worshiping our flesh
while we allow our souls
to starve to death"
these were my two favorite stanzas. the descriptions there are just great. excellent writing!
