BEGGER ON THE STREET

BEGGER ON THE STREET

A Poem by Cassie

She sits on the street corner day-to-day

With a baby perched on her back,

Her frail hands stretched out to all who pass, so they can give her cash,

Sometimes she breastfeeds her baby,

Her breasts so frail, No food for the baby,

People pass her as though she existed not,

Day in day out she is always on that street,

Dawn comes and goes she is still there

Her baby suffers the same fate as she,

I wonder who took her purity away,

What human being had the impudence to make her a mamma?

Her child seems like a big liability,

Perhaps she was even brought up the same way,

When there is a celebration, there is no one to party with her,

She only has her baby,

So many questions I ask,

Who will get her out of this predicament?

I give her a dime but I still wonder,

Tomorrow she will still be on the streets.

This was really heart-wrenching for me. Not that I've been through it, but I have seen beggars on the street from time to time, holding out Styrofoam cups for change. It's sad to see those same few people, sitting or standing by the curbs, asking for any spare change that people have. More or less, it's sad enough to see the people passing without even noticing those helpless people. I feel beggars deserve a load of respect, for being able to sit or stand out on the same place every day and do the same thing over and over, then try and find a place to sleep, then do it all over again. It's a constant struggle for one to learn to live on the streets, it's not easy and for those who think it might be, should just try and see how long they last before begging for some cash or some real food. Wonderful write :)

'BEGGER ON THE STREET'
Cassie,
What do we do? We all see these 'people.' I hope they are more than just people. We can at least try to see them as human beings with a life story and maybe over time come to know them. Their stories are all different just like ours. I have written some concerning my own relation ships with 'the homeless.' I feel terribly inadequate in my meager efforts to help.
Blessings,
Kathy
