School in August

School in August

A Poem by CatT
"

For some reason, one of my most clear memories of school is sitting near the air conditioning unit when it was hot outside. So many sensory memories still hanging around.

"

I remember coming in from recess.
Going happily to my desk.
It was late August,
But no matter,
I was the lucky one
Next to the air conditioner
Hanging out the window.

I reached my hands toward the front of the unit,
Feeling the cold air blowing them.
I slipped my feet out of my flip flops
And placed them flat on the cold floor,
Making a contented sigh
As my flesh cooled.

But most of all, the smell.
The indescribable smell
of an air conditioning unit
Running on high.
Deeply I would breathe it in,
The chill of the air and the scent
Mixing in my nose.

Those hot days,
I hated to hear the last bell ring.
Time to go home,
And away from my air conditioned Heaven
In a classroom
In a small country town.

This is a development from your previous work Cat, and the reason is you are focussing on the real, the sensory, the felt - I like this tremendous atmosphere of the hot days you evoke, counterpointed with the oh so chill of the A/C Unit - excellent.
