Antiquity

A Story by Cherrie

a rest by the sea

I had no desire to follow along on this day. I wanted to be alone. No wanted is not the right word I longed to find a moment of solaces from their none stop chatter and never endless needs.  The house-hold had spent the morning complaining over the low overhang of clouds, but they were a welcome mystery to me.

No sooner had the Blazer left than I donned my wrap and headed to the peer. A wafting breeze met me with the faint smell of shellfish and salt. The air was thick with water and I could feel my hair curling up with each step. The sun’s futile attempt to clear the heavy miasma left me with an ethereal sensation that loomed in the air. The greyish white fog depended in color and consistency as it rested on the water creating an illusion of a mighty abyss before me.

The antiquity of this place thronged my imagination and soon the warm breeze and the soft lapping of the water nursed me into a restful state on bemusement. The voices from a distant ship fell upon my consciousness as a welcoming whisper to sleep.

I loved sleeping on the water. I laid across my small canoe and  allowed the gentling rocking of the waves carry me. Moments before my slumber I was thinking of the wild Spanish mustangs that once roamed across this land and as my lingering thoughts merged with my dreams I could hear the thunderous ponding of their hoofs.  This made my own heart race and envy those days long past. When life was ripe for the taking.  A quick jarring of the boat snapped me awake. I was dazed for just a moment as I tried to recall where I was for a split second I thought an angel was in the boat with me. With a small shaking of my head my facilities retuned and my visitor was no more. I had drifted from the peer. Luckily I was close enough to still see it. I made my way back, tied off the boat and noticed a large foot print in the far seat of the canoe. I gazed off into the fog for what seemed like an eternity. For what I do not know. but the who of it made me gaze to heaven and wonder.
