Broken Eyes

Broken Eyes

A Poem by James Kay

We want so badly to drink ourselves to death,

But we're far too scared to touch the bottles all around us.

Years later we're still here, waiting for someone to tell us we tried our best.

Car crashes happen.

We can't all be heroes every time.

Especially not the times that count.

But I still see broken eyes staring out,

And all I can do is stand by. Watch them die.

Lying on my bed of shattered windshields and spinning wheels

from the burning cars that are in my dreams.

This is very poignant. Each line short, deep and jarring. I liked the end of the poem but felt that calling it all a dream seemed to take away from it. In the beginning I had the sense the poem was about the final end of a life that seemed half lived. I have to admit the imagery of the broken windshield, the lifeless eyes and the spinning wheels burned a strong picture in my brain. Very well done.

My favorite part of this poem is..:

"We can't all be heroes every time.

Especially not the times that count.

But I still see broken eyes staring out,

And all I can do is stand by. Watch them die."

...

This poem touched me, I find it very true. This piece of work is really good! Great job. :)
