Your Gray Woolen Shirt

Your Gray Woolen Shirt

A Poem by Christina May Shanaberg

Sometimes we place a special value on things others can't understand!

Your Gray Woolen Shirt

Everytime that I remember you,

I remember your gray woolen shirt;

I think of the times that we, once, knew,

And the times when you gave me your heart.

That night was so very cold and frosty;

You wrapped your warm shirt 'round me;

Sometimes, time has passed a century,

But your gray shirt still is here comforting me.

Many people don't like the feel of wool,

The material that covers my broken heart;

I use your shirt as a pain killing tool,

That helps me to believe we are not apart.

You were as gray and old, as this torn shirt,

But I loved you, up until you were called away;

I never thought that I could feel such hurt;

I'm glad that your old, gray shirt is here to stay.

I absolutely loved this! It reminded me of a favorite song by Mary Chapin Carpenter called This Shirt..."This shirt has silver buttons and a grand old history..." You simply must give it a listen on YouTube...its fabulous! You will definitely relate to it as I did to this wonderful write of yours. (hugs) F.

It is the thought, sentiment and just plain "invested living," that make this "old, gray shirt" a genuine thing of beauty--as is your lovely poetic tribute.
Heartfelt, truly touching work, Christina.
