Dawn Does Come

Dawn Does Come

A Poem by Claire Dubelle
"

This is to a boy who lost his fight too early. This is to a boy who did not deserve the hand he was dealt. This is to a boy who died. This is how I made it make sense.

"

I can’t pretend to know what

Waking up in the middle of the night to a star-spangled sky,

And feeling your breath stop

is like.

Maybe it feels beautiful.

Maybe everything falls into place because that is what

I want

Death

To be like.

Maybe your eyes fluttered open and you

Smiled just a little bit, and

Prayed to a God you never believed in,

But who believed in you nonetheless.

And tucked underneath your sweat soaked pillow

Were hand written notes in your

Shaky Scripture.

Because you knew.

And you accepted,

And you felt safe,

And you felt loved,

And so you wrote down a few things.

You felt content

Because that’s how

I

Wanted you to feel.

Because you didn’t deserve to suffer.

Because we don’t deserve to

Believe that death is anything less than

Valiant.

So the story continues like this:

The doctors rushed in,

You fought until your last breath

You lost the battle

And found peace.

Or, maybe everything is complete bullshit.

Maybe you were scared.

Maybe you felt hopeless

And lost and angry that

Tomorrow the sun would rise and spring would be in bloom.

And maybe you teared up just a little bit,

Because sobbing took breath

And you had

None.

Did those tears glisten?

If they did, I hope

They made your eyes

Look like the sky…

Star-spangled,

With dawn just around the corner
